A Day Trip to Lamma Island!

I have to start this post with what many of you may be thinking - no, Lamma Island doesn't have any llamas. I know, so sad. It's a beautiful little island right off of the coast of Hong Kong Island, and it's where Bryan and I spent the National Holiday day off on Wednesday!

Since we both had the day off, we slept in a little bit (well, Bryan slept in for him, I still thought 8:00am didn't count as sleeping in! But I'm just not a morning person ever.), and then caught the 9:30am boat to Lamma Island. The boat right was beautiful, much less bumpy than the one to Macau, and it was only about 20-25 minutes. When we got off the boat, we walked through the tiny town of Yung Shue Wan, which led us to the "Lamma Island Family Walk". It was about a 5K walk that takes you to another part of the island. It takes you through many tiny towns (literally a block or two each at most), to a few small beaches, up the mountain to gorgeous views, and back down the mountain to the town of Sok Kwu Wan.

It was a beautiful hike, and here is a collage of some of the hiking and town photos:

Beach, Trail, View from Top, Yung Shue Wan

This hike was definitely unique because it is such a small island, and you see so many different landscapes in less than an hour and a half. The beaches were small, but beautiful, and then 20 minutes later we were on top of the mountain - gorgeous! We did experience something scary: the largest spiders we've ever seen. Bryan said they "don't bite" but hello, they're giant spiders! Not taking my chances. So because Bryan is amazing, he would warn me every single time he saw one approaching (which was very often) - thankfully they were all off to the side of the trail. That's not true, the biggest one was in the middle of the trail and I ducked down ridiculously low to avoid it. Bryan took a photo so I might add that to the posting later, but you probably don't want to see it. You will be disappointed to know that the photo is a close up of the spider, not me ducking down :)

Even though it was just about 3.5 miles of hiking, it was over 100 degrees and over 90 percent humidity - at 10:00 in the morning. So, as you can imagine, both of us sweat more than we have in our entire lives in about 1 hour and 15 minutes! You can't really tell in the photos below, but our shirts were completely soaked - lovely, I know. With that said, I hope this post isn't coming off too negative - even though it was hot and we saw giant spiders, it was beautiful and I'd definitely recommend seeing it if you can!

Before and After the Hike

After we ended the hike and arrived in the town of Sok Kwu Wan, we ate lunch at a local seafood place called "Rainbow Seafood". It was delicious and very fresh - all of the live fish are sitting in tanks in front of the restaurant, and you can see people in the water fishing as you eat.

Shrimp, Fried Rice, and Lobster!

Since it's such a small island, there weren't a lot of other activities after the hike and lunch, so we waited to catch the next ferry back to Hong Kong Island, and were back in our apartment by 2:00pm. Before we left, we were able to see some dragon boat racing, which is a big deal here, and we hadn't seen any yet! So overall, a wonderful day with Bryan (as usual)!
